Magical Shimla Moments
Shimla is the finest state of India with the city blending
stunning scenery, and extensive history and a refreshing ambience. Shimla and
the surrounding region make for a great destination either art of a tour to
northern India or an excursion from Delhi. It is situated on the edge of the
Himalayan foothills, with crystal clear air and pine covered steep hills that
overlook the snowy peaks to the north. This immaculate area and cooler
atmosphere persuaded the British Raj to set up their midyear capital in Shimla
to maintain a strategic distance from the stifling warmth of Delhi summers.

edge of the Himalayan foothills. Toward the south the hills reduce to the
fields of Delhi while toward the north the pinnacles ascend to converge with
the cloud line. The central avenue of Shimla, which runs the length of the
edge, is the main level surface of the capital while every single other street
fall away to the valley floor on either side of the edge.

days. Shimla consists of various historical sites, wonderful hikes and an
exuberant night life of bars and eateries. Well known short hikes included the

Indians to walk around and admire the splendid colonial architecture.
Shimla is very different from rest of the Indian
states and has retained its old world charm. The culture of Shimla is
such that it depicts a sound sense of balance between customary values and
modern imaginations and hence we can say that the cultural heritage of Shimla
is very much traditional and rural. And it is loaded with exoticness. But it is

History & Culture in Shimla
History
The history of Shimla traces back to the early 19th century during the
Anglo-Gurkha War. In 1804, after suffering defeat at Kangra, the Gurkhas began
invading hill states around Shimla, establishing strongholds like Jagatgarh
(later Jutogh cantonment). By 1808, they had taken control of the region from
the Yamuna to the Satluj and ruled oppressively from their capital at Arki.
Distressed locals sought British help, prompting Major General Sir David
Ochterlony to lead a campaign. After fierce battles, notably at Ramgarh and the
decisive Battle of Malaon in May 1815, the Gurkhas were defeated and forced to
sign the Treaty of Sanjauli.
Post-victory, the British restored lands to allied hill chiefs and rewarded the Maharaja of Patiala. Shimla came under British influence, with key forts like Sabathu and Kotgarh retained for strategic control. Present-day Shimla District encompasses 19 former princely hill states, including Bushahr, one of the oldest, believed to have been founded by Pradhuman, son of Lord Krishna, after his victory over Banasura at Sarahan.
Culture of Shimla
The
culture of Shimla is a harmonious blend of age-old rural traditions and a
modern cosmopolitan outlook. While the scenic hill station has grown into a
popular tourist hub, its cultural roots remain deeply connected to the life and
customs of the native people. The locals, known as Shimlaites or Pahari
people, primarily rely on agriculture and cattle rearing for livelihood. Life
here is simple and community-oriented, with villagers residing in small
slate-roofed huts that are equipped with the basic necessities of daily living.
Despite modernization, the social and cultural fabric of Shimla reflects
warmth, cooperation, and a strong connection with nature.
Music and Dance
Music
and dance in Shimla are not just means of entertainment but an essential part
of religious and social life. These traditional performing arts have withstood
the test of time, passed down through generations with little change. Most
performances are ritualistic in nature, held to honor deities and seek divine
blessings during festivals and community celebrations. The music is
predominantly instrumental, with popular instruments including the flute, ghariyal,
and ghungroo.
Dances
like Kayang, Bakayang, Bnayangchu, Jataru Kayang, Chohara, Shand, and Rasa are
unique to Shimla and are not found elsewhere in India. These group dances,
often performed in colorful traditional attire, showcase the collective spirit
and storytelling heritage of the Pahari community. The combination of rhythmic
steps, lively music, and traditional costumes adds vibrant energy to local
festivals.
Arts and Crafts
Shimla's
arts and crafts are a major attraction for visitors, offering a rich collection
of handmade goods that reflect local skill and creativity. The region is known
for its beautifully embroidered shawls, finely crafted jewelry, leather items,
and traditional woodwork. Thanks to the abundance of Pine and Deodar trees in
the region, wood carving has become a significant craft. Wood from these trees
is used not just in architecture but also to create small decorative items like
jewelry boxes, fruit bowls, and figurines.
Rugs
and carpets woven in Shimla are another popular craft, often adorned with
floral patterns and regional motifs. These are made using wool sourced from
locally reared sheep. Blankets and woolen garments made in Shimla are warm,
durable, and intricately designed—ideal for the cold Himalayan climate.
People and Lifestyle
The
people of Shimla lead simple, close-knit lives. Traditionally dressed women can
be seen in Salwar-Kameez, Kurtas, or the long outfit known as Juan Chadiyan,
which is typical of Pahari culture. The lifestyle here is deeply rooted in the
land, with horticulture and livestock farming forming the economic backbone of
rural Shimla.
Despite
the influx of tourists and modern infrastructure, locals maintain a deep
respect for their customs and heritage. Social life revolves around festivals,
temple gatherings, and fairs, providing opportunities for community bonding.
Language and Religion
Pahari
is the most widely spoken language in Shimla, though Hindi is also common,
especially among the younger population and in official settings. Shimla is
home to many temples, churches, and shrines, reflecting its religious
diversity. Major festivals include the Summer Festival, Winter Carnival,
Shivratri, the Ice Skating Carnival, and the International Folk Festival, all
celebrated with great enthusiasm and traditional pomp.
Food in Shimla
The
cuisine of Shimla is predominantly North Indian, adapted to suit the cold
climate. Staples include rice, bread (roti), lentils, and a variety of spiced
vegetables. Local flavors rely heavily on aromatic spices like cardamom,
cinnamon, cloves, pepper, and red chilies. Shimla offers a mix of vegetarian
and non-vegetarian dishes. Popular vegetarian dishes include guchhi matter
(morel mushrooms with peas), kaddu ka khatta (spiced pumpkin curry), and sepu vadi
(lentil dumplings in spinach gravy), offering a unique taste of the region’s
culinary heritage.
